A Balkans road trip crosses borders fast. You can have breakfast in Albania, lunch in Montenegro and spend the night in Kosovo or North Macedonia. None of these countries is in the EU, so EU roaming rules don't apply. The question isn't just which eSIM is cheapest; it's which one keeps working across the whole route. This guide shows which bundles actually cover the Balkans, with live prices, and the one country that changes the picture: Kosovo.
The quick answer
- Albania, Montenegro and North Macedonia (plus Serbia) are covered by plenty of multi-country bundles, many of them cheap and many of them covering much of Europe too.
- Kosovo is the exception. Far fewer bundles include it, and the ones that do cost noticeably more. If Kosovo is on your route, check for it on the plan before you buy.
- Bosnia and Herzegovina: if it's on your route, open the bundle's full country list before you pay, because Balkans bundles differ on the smaller countries.
- Mostly in one country? If you spend most of the trip in Albania and only cross the border for a day, a single-country Albania plan is often cheaper. Compare it with the bundles below.
The core route: Albania, Montenegro, North Macedonia
The classic loop of the Albanian Riviera, Kotor Bay and Lake Ohrid covers these three countries. These are the cheapest bundles that cover all three right now:

Look at the country count in each row. Some are compact Balkans bundles of eight to twelve countries, while others cover forty or more and also take in Greece, Croatia and Italy, which helps if you arrive or leave by ferry from Italy or over land from Greece.
Adding Kosovo
Prizren and Pristina are easy additions to an Albania or North Macedonia trip, but plan your data for them. Here are the cheapest bundles that also include Kosovo and Serbia:

The difference from the table above is the point of this guide. Kosovo is outside most "Europe" bundles, so a cheap plan that covers Albania and Montenegro may simply stop working at the Kosovo border. You have two sensible options:
- One wider bundle that includes Kosovo from the table above. It costs a bit more, but you don't have to think about it at the border.
- A cheaper bundle for the core route plus a small Kosovo plan for the days you're there. This is often cheaper if you only spend a day or two in Kosovo. See the plans on our Kosovo page.
Coming from Greece or Croatia
Many Balkans trips start or end in Greece or Croatia. If yours does, a wider bundle usually beats two separate plans. These cover both Albania and Greece:

Single-country plans for the main stops
If most of your trip is in one country, compare the cheapest realistic single-country plan with the bundles above:
- Albania: $2.17 from abesteSIM (125 providers compared on the Albania page)
- Montenegro: $2.17 from abesteSIM (122 providers compared on the Montenegro page)
- North Macedonia: $2.72 from 4S eSIM (115 providers compared on the North Macedonia page)
- Serbia: $2.17 from abesteSIM (122 providers compared on the Serbia page)
"Realistic" here means at least a week and a few GB, not a one-day emergency plan, so the comparison with a bundle is fair.
How to pick for your trip
- A week on the Albanian coast with a day in Kotor: a compact Balkans bundle from the first table, or an Albania plan if the price gap is large.
- Two weeks through four or five countries: one bundle. Check whether Kosovo and Bosnia are on your route and pick the table that matches.
- Arriving from Greece or Italy: a wide Europe bundle that includes Albania and Montenegro, so you're connected from the ferry port onwards.
- Long stay in one place (a month in Tirana or Belgrade): a single-country plan with more data is usually cheaper per GB than any bundle.
A few things worth knowing before you buy
Coverage in the mountains is patchy whichever eSIM you choose. The Accursed Mountains, the Durmitor area and some valley roads have long stretches without signal, so download offline maps before you set off.
Border crossings sometimes take your phone a minute or two to find the next country's network. If it doesn't connect on its own, turn airplane mode on and off, and check that data roaming is enabled for the travel eSIM (not for your home SIM).
Ferries between Italy and Albania or Montenegro can pick up maritime networks that charge far more than your home roaming. Leave your home SIM's data roaming switched off on board.
