Southeast Asia is made for multi-country trips: Bangkok to Siem Reap by bus, a cheap flight to Kuala Lumpur, a few days in Singapore, then the islands. Buying a local SIM in every country is the old way. Today one eSIM can cover the whole route, but the bundles differ more than you might expect: some cover just three countries, others the whole region, and the price follows. This guide shows live prices for the most common routes and when a single-country plan is still the better deal.
The quick answer
- Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore is the easiest combination. Small three-country bundles are cheap and widely available.
- Adding Vietnam, Cambodia and Indonesia means a wider regional bundle. It costs more, but it's still usually cheaper and simpler than buying three or four local plans.
- Spending most of the trip in Thailand? A Thai plan for the main stay is often the cheapest option. Many travellers then add a small bundle for the next leg.
- Check the country list. "Asia" bundles vary a lot: some include China, Japan or Australia, some leave out Cambodia or Laos.
Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore
The classic southern route runs from Bangkok to Penang and Kuala Lumpur, then on to Singapore. These are the cheapest bundles covering all three right now:

Single-country plans for the main stops
For long stays in one country, a single-country plan is usually cheapest. The cheapest realistic plan in each:
- Thailand: $1.84 from abesteSIM (130 providers compared on the Thailand page)
- Vietnam: $1.66 from abesteSIM (130 providers compared on the Vietnam page)
- Malaysia: $1.48 from abesteSIM (128 providers compared on the Malaysia page)
- Singapore: $1.91 from ASimGo (129 providers compared on the Singapore page)
- Indonesia: $2.24 from abesteSIM (131 providers compared on the Indonesia page)
- Cambodia: $2.62 from abesteSIM (126 providers compared on the Cambodia page)
"Realistic" means at least a week and a few GB, so the comparison with a bundle is fair.
How to pick for your trip
- Two weeks in Thailand with a few days in Malaysia: a Thailand plan for most of the trip, or a three-country bundle if the gap is small. You also cover Singapore if your plans change.
- A month-long loop through four or more countries: one wide regional bundle. Pick a validity that covers the whole trip; a 30-day plan is safer than stacking two shorter ones.
- Singapore stopover plus Bali: check that Indonesia is on the bundle. Many three-country Thailand-Malaysia-Singapore bundles leave it out.
- Heavy data use (remote work, video calls): look at the data allowance per day of travel. Regional bundles keep prices low with smaller allowances, while single-country unlimited plans are common in Thailand and Vietnam.
A few things worth knowing before you buy
Some regional bundles route your traffic through another country (often Singapore or Hong Kong). It doesn't affect everyday use, but local banking apps and some streaming services can behave differently. If that matters, check the routing note in the plan details.
Coverage on islands and in national parks varies. Major islands such as Phuket, Koh Samui, Langkawi and Bali are well covered; smaller islands may have one network only, so a bundle that uses that network matters more than the price.
Install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi and switch it on when you land. Most plans start counting days from the first connection.
