7 Best Places to Visit in Colombia

Colombia packs an unusual amount into one country: Caribbean beaches, Andean capitals above 2,600 metres, coffee country, and an island closer to Nicaragua than to the mainland. That range is the whole appeal, and it's also why a first trip here tends to sprawl.

These seven places are the ones most first-time itineraries are built around, and for good reason.

1. Cartagena

Cartagena's walled Old Town and the fortress of San Felipe de Barajas together form a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the city is the single most photographed place in Colombia. Inside the walls the streets are lined with balconied colonial houses in saturated colours; just outside them, Getsemaní has become the city's more lived-in counterpart. It sits on the Caribbean, so it is hot and humid essentially all year.

2. Medellín

Medellín sits in the Aburrá Valley at around 1,500 metres, which gives it a mild, consistent climate year-round — the reason it is known as the City of Eternal Spring. Its Metrocable gondola lines are part of the public transport network rather than a tourist attraction, running up to hillside neighbourhoods that the metro can't reach. The ride up is also the cheapest panoramic view of the valley you'll find.

3. Bogotá

The capital sits at roughly 2,640 metres in the Andes, making it one of the highest capital cities in the world — expect to feel the altitude for a day or two. La Candelaria is the historic centre, with the Gold Museum and Botero Museum both within walking distance of each other. Monserrate rises sharply above the city and is reached by funicular or cable car.

4. Guatapé

Guatapé is a small town about two hours from Medellín, known for its zócalos — brightly painted relief panels along the lower walls of its houses. Just outside town, El Peñón de Guatapé is a granite monolith with a staircase of more than 700 steps built into a fissure in the rock. From the top you look out over a reservoir that fragments into dozens of islands and inlets.

5. Cocora Valley

The Cocora Valley, near Salento in the Quindío department, is home to the Quindío wax palm — Colombia's national tree and the tallest palm species in the world, reaching over 50 metres. Seeing them scattered across open green hillsides rather than in dense forest is what makes the landscape so distinctive. The valley forms part of Los Nevados National Natural Park.

6. Tayrona National Park

Tayrona sits on the Caribbean coast near Santa Marta, at the point where the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta — the world's highest coastal mountain range — comes down to the sea. The park protects rainforest, a string of coves and beaches, and archaeological remains of the Tayrona people. Not every beach here is safe for swimming, and the park closes for several weeks a year for ecological recovery.

7. San Andrés

San Andrés is a Colombian island in the Caribbean that lies far closer to Nicaragua than to the Colombian mainland. It sits within the Seaflower Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO-designated marine area, and the surrounding shallows are what give the water its famously banded colours. The island's culture is Raizal, with English-based Creole spoken alongside Spanish.

Staying connected while you travel
