Cyprus packs Roman ruins, Byzantine monasteries, and Mediterranean coastline into an island small enough to cross in a few hours by car. Here are seven places worth building a trip around.
1. Paphos Archaeological Park

This UNESCO World Heritage Site in Paphos holds some of the finest Roman mosaics in the eastern Mediterranean, including the House of Dionysos, alongside a Hellenistic-Roman theatre and the ruins of a medieval fort. The site has been excavated since the 1960s and new mosaics are still being uncovered.
2. Akamas Peninsula

The wild, undeveloped tip of western Cyprus, the Akamas Peninsula is best known for the Blue Lagoon, a sheltered bay of clear turquoise water usually reached by boat trip or off-road track from Latchi. The peninsula is also a protected nature reserve and a nesting site for loggerhead and green sea turtles.
3. Nicosia Old Town

Cyprus's capital is the world's last divided capital city, split by a UN buffer zone since 1974. Its Venetian-walled old town holds the Selimiye Mosque (a former Gothic cathedral), the Cyprus Museum, and Ledra Street, which crosses the checkpoint into the Turkish-administered north.
4. Ayia Napa

Once a quiet fishing village, Ayia Napa is now known for Nissi Beach's turquoise water and its cluster of sea caves along the nearby coastal path. A 16th-century monastery still stands at the centre of town, a reminder of what the area looked like before it became a resort destination.
5. Troodos Mountains

Cyprus's central mountain range is home to Mount Olympus, the island's highest peak, along with a cluster of painted Byzantine churches so well preserved they're collectively UNESCO-listed. The cooler climate also makes Troodos a popular escape from the coast in summer.
6. Kykkos Monastery

Founded in the 11th century high in the Troodos foothills, Kykkos is one of the wealthiest and most richly decorated monasteries in Cyprus, said to house an icon of the Virgin Mary painted by St Luke. Archbishop Makarios III, Cyprus's first president, served here as a novice monk.
7. Limassol

Cyprus's second-largest city blends a Crusader-era castle (where Richard the Lionheart married Berengaria of Navarre in 1191) with a modern marina and seafront promenade. It's also the base for day trips to Kourion and the wineries of the nearby Krasochoria villages.
Staying connected while you travel
Cyprus has solid 4G/5G coverage across both the Greek-administered south and the areas open to visitors, so an eSIM works well whether you're island-hopping the coast or driving up into Troodos.
