Madagascar separated from the African mainland long enough ago that most of what lives here lives nowhere else — the lemurs, most of the baobab species, and a good share of the reptiles. Travel is slow and roads are rough, so trips here are usually built around two or three regions rather than a full circuit.
These seven places are the ones most itineraries are anchored to.
1. The Avenue of the Baobabs
This stretch of dirt road near Morondava, on the west coast, is lined with Grandidier's baobabs — the largest of Madagascar's baobab species, with trunks that run straight up for tens of metres before branching. Madagascar has six endemic baobab species, more than anywhere else on earth. Many of the trees along the avenue are several hundred years old.
2. Tsingy de Bemaraha
Tsingy de Bemaraha is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the west, and the landscape has no real equivalent anywhere: limestone eroded from below by groundwater and from above by rain into a forest of vertical, razor-edged pinnacles. The name comes from a Malagasy phrase meaning roughly "where one cannot walk barefoot." Visitors cross it on via ferrata cables and suspension bridges.
3. Andasibe-Mantadia National Park
Andasibe is the most accessible rainforest reserve from the capital and the best-known place to see the indri — the largest living lemur, whose wailing call carries for kilometres through the forest. Several other lemur species live here alongside it, including the black-and-white ruffed lemur. Being close to Antananarivo makes it the usual first stop on an eastern route.
4. Isalo National Park
Isalo protects a sandstone massif in the south, eroded over time into canyons, gorges and isolated natural swimming pools. The landscape is dry and open, a complete contrast to the eastern rainforests, and the walking is the main reason to come. Ring-tailed lemurs are regularly seen along the trails.
5. Nosy Be
Nosy Be is an island off the northwest coast and Madagascar's main beach destination, with the country's most developed tourist infrastructure. It has long been a centre of ylang-ylang cultivation, and the scent of the plantations is noticeable across parts of the island. Smaller islands nearby are reached by boat for snorkelling and diving.
6. Ranomafana National Park
Ranomafana is montane rainforest in the southeast, inscribed as part of the UNESCO-listed Rainforests of the Atsinanana. The park exists because of a discovery: the golden bamboo lemur was found here in the 1980s, previously unknown to science, and the reserve was created to protect it. It remains one of the best places in the country for rainforest wildlife.
7. Antananarivo
The capital is built across a ridge of hills at around 1,280 metres, which gives it a mild climate and a steep, stacked skyline of narrow houses. The Rova, the former royal palace compound, occupies the highest point. Almost every trip passes through here, and the Analakely market and the old upper town are worth the day it takes to see them.
Staying connected while you travel
Mobile coverage is reasonable in Antananarivo, Nosy Be and the larger towns, and follows the main national roads between them. In the parks and on the long stretches of RN7 and the western routes it drops out for hours at a time, so download maps and book confirmations before leaving a city.
