New Zealand packs glaciers, fiords, volcanoes, and subtropical beaches into two islands roughly the size of the United Kingdom, and most of its best-known sights are a road trip rather than a flight apart. Here are seven of the best places to visit.
1. Milford Sound
Carved by glaciers inside Fiordland National Park, Milford Sound is the South Island's most famous fiord, with Mitre Peak rising almost straight out of the water and waterfalls pouring off the cliffs after rain. Rudyard Kipling reportedly called it the eighth wonder of the world. Most visitors drive the scenic Milford Road from Te Anau and take a cruise out towards the Tasman Sea.
2. Queenstown
Set on the shore of Lake Wakatipu beneath The Remarkables range, Queenstown is New Zealand's adventure capital — commercial bungy jumping began at the nearby Kawarau Gorge Suspension Bridge in 1988. The Skyline Gondola climbs Bob's Peak for views over the lake, and the town is a base for skiing in winter and for the wine region of Central Otago.
3. Aoraki / Mount Cook
At 3,724 metres, Aoraki / Mount Cook is New Zealand's highest mountain and the centrepiece of the national park that shares its name. The Hooker Valley Track, an easy walk of around 10 kilometres return, crosses swing bridges to a glacial lake that often has icebergs floating in it. The surrounding Mackenzie Basin is part of an International Dark Sky Reserve, known for exceptionally clear night skies.
4. Rotorua
Rotorua sits on one of the most active geothermal fields in the world, with bubbling mud pools, steaming vents, and the Pōhutu Geyser at Te Puia. About half an hour south, Wai-O-Tapu is known for the vividly coloured Champagne Pool. The city is also a centre of Māori culture, with evening performances and hāngī feasts cooked in the ground.
5. Tongariro National Park
Established in 1887, Tongariro is New Zealand's oldest national park and a dual UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognised for both its volcanic landscape and its cultural significance to Māori. The Tongariro Alpine Crossing, a 19.4-kilometre day hike, passes between Mount Tongariro and the cone of Mount Ngauruhoe, which stood in for Mount Doom in The Lord of the Rings films.
6. Waitomo Glowworm Caves
Beneath the farmland of the North Island's Waikato region, the Waitomo caves are lit by thousands of glowworms — the larvae of a fungus gnat found only in New Zealand. The classic tour ends with a silent boat ride through the Glowworm Grotto, while more adventurous visitors go blackwater rafting through the underground rivers on inner tubes.
7. Bay of Islands
The Bay of Islands in Northland is a subtropical stretch of coast with around 144 islands, best explored by boat for dolphin watching, sailing, and trips out to the Hole in the Rock. On the shore at Waitangi, the Treaty Grounds mark where the Treaty of Waitangi was first signed in 1840, New Zealand's founding document.
