7 Best Places to Visit in Belgium

Belgium packs medieval city centers, a world-famous castle or two, and some of Europe's best show caves into a country small enough to see most of it on a single trip. Here are seven places that make it worth more than a Brussels layover.

1. Grand Place, Brussels

The central square of Brussels, ringed by ornate guildhalls, the Gothic Town Hall, and the Breadhouse (Maison du Roi). UNESCO inscribed it as a World Heritage Site in 1998, citing it as an outstanding example of the eclectic architectural styles of the late 17th century, after the square was rebuilt following a French bombardment in 1695.

2. Atomium, Brussels

Built for the 1958 World's Fair, this 102-meter structure represents an iron crystal magnified 165 billion times. Originally intended as a temporary pavilion, it became a permanent Brussels landmark; several of its nine spheres are open to the public, connected by escalators and tubes, with a restaurant in the top sphere.

3. Bruges Historic Centre

A medieval city whose canal-lined core was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000. Its cobbled streets, the Markt square with its 83-meter belfry, and the Béguinage — a former community for religious laywomen — survive largely intact, in part because the city's economic decline in the late Middle Ages left it comparatively undeveloped afterward.

4. Gravensteen Castle, Ghent

A moated medieval castle in the center of Ghent, built around 1180 by Count Philip of Alsace and modeled partly on Crusader castles he had seen in the Holy Land. It's one of the few fully moated castles left in Europe and now houses a museum, including a collection of medieval weaponry.

5. Antwerp Cathedral

The Cathedral of Our Lady, a Gothic cathedral whose construction spanned nearly two centuries starting in 1352, is the largest church in the Low Countries and home to four paintings by Peter Paul Rubens, including "The Elevation of the Cross" and "The Descent from the Cross." Its spire, completed in 1521, reaches 123 meters.

6. Dinant Citadel

A fortress perched on a cliff above the Meuse River, overlooking the town of Dinant. The current citadel dates mostly from the early 19th century, though a fortification has stood on the site since the 11th century, and it can be reached by cable car or a long staircase from the riverside. Dinant is also the birthplace of Adolphe Sax, inventor of the saxophone.

7. Han-sur-Lesse Caves

One of Europe's largest and most visited show caves, formed by the Lesse River, which flows underground through part of the cave system. Visitors reach the caves by an old tram before touring roughly a kilometer of chambers, some large enough to host a nightly sound-and-light show.
