Morocco squeezes an astonishing range of experiences into one trip: medieval medinas, Atlantic port towns, blue-washed mountain villages, earthen kasbahs and the dunes of the Sahara. 1. Jemaa el-Fnaa, Marrakech
The great square at the heart of Marrakech's medina, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985. By day it's a place of orange-juice stalls, henna artists and snake charmers; after dark it fills with open-air food stalls, storytellers and musicians. UNESCO lists the square's cultural space as a masterpiece of intangible heritage, and the souks of the medina begin just off its northern edge.
2. Chefchaouen
A small town in the Rif Mountains of northern Morocco, famous for the blue-washed walls, steps and doorways of its old medina. Founded in 1471, it's slower-paced than the big imperial cities and a good base for hikes into the surrounding hills, including the walk to the Ras el-Maa spring just outside the old walls.
3. Fes el-Bali
The old walled medina of Fes, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1981 and one of the largest car-free urban areas in the world. Its maze of lanes holds the University of al-Qarawiyyin, founded in 859 and often cited as the oldest continuously operating university, and the Chouara tannery, where leather is still dyed by hand in stone vats — best seen from the terraces of the surrounding leather shops.
4. Aït Benhaddou
A fortified village (ksar) of earthen buildings on the old caravan route between the Sahara and Marrakech, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987. Its clustered clay houses climbing a hillside above the river have appeared in many films and TV series, and it's an easy stop on the road over the High Atlas between Marrakech and Ouarzazate.
5. Erg Chebbi, Merzouga
Morocco's most famous sea of sand dunes, rising up to around 150 metres above the desert floor near the village of Merzouga, close to the Algerian border. Most visitors ride in by camel in the late afternoon to spend a night in a desert camp, watching the sunset and sunrise from the top of the dunes.
6. Hassan II Mosque, Casablanca
One of the largest mosques in the world, completed in 1993 on a platform built partly over the Atlantic Ocean. Its minaret, around 210 metres tall, is among the tallest anywhere, and it's one of the few mosques in Morocco that non-Muslims can visit — on guided tours outside prayer times.
7. Essaouira
A windswept Atlantic port town whose fortified medina was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2001. Its working harbour is full of blue fishing boats beneath the old sea bastions, the fish is grilled fresh at stalls by the port, and the steady trade winds have made its long beach a favourite with kitesurfers and windsurfers.
8. Dades Gorge
A dramatic canyon carved by the Dades River on the southern side of the High Atlas, reached from the town of Boumalne Dades. The valley is known for its strange, rounded rock formations, a famous series of hairpin bends climbing the gorge wall, and the kasbahs and palm groves along the river below.
